DIET TIPS FOR DIGESTION PROBLEMS

 

Following food items should be avoided for a better digestive system:

 

  • DAIRY PRODUCTS

         Milk and other dairy products are hard to digest because they contain sugar known as lactose. This sugar creates problems in the large intestine. One can go for yogurt, hard cheese and lactose free milk.

 

  • ACIDIC FOODS

          Carbonated drinks, tomato sauce and citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit, are acidic and can irritate the stomach lining, causing digestive problems.

 

  • FATTY AND FRIED FOODS

     Food items that contain fats like butter, ice cream, red meat, and cheese should be avoided. These fatty foods slow down the emptying of stomach and hence worsen constipation. Too much of oil interrupts the digestion process.

 

  • SPICY FOOD

More of spicy food disturbs the stomach lining and hence causes stomach ache and indigestion. It is different for every individual, as some individuals have good tolerance to spicy food and their body is use to it and vice versa.

 

  • CAFFEEINE

Caffeine increases the amount of acid in your stomach and may cause heartburn or upset stomach.

 

  • ALCOHOL

Alcohol is toxic to the stomach lining and changes liver metabolism. Drinking too much can cause indigestion, among other health problems.

 

  • ARTIFICIAL SWEETNER AND PROCESSED FOODS

 

Known as the hard-to-digest sugar, is present in peaches. Also used in processed food items. Hence it is advisable to avoid processed food as it contains artificial sweetner, spices and lots of oil, which leads to digestion issues.

 

Food items to be consumed for a better digestive system:

 

  • FRUITS

Fruits like apples, banana, blueberry, kiwi, papaya, cantaloupe and avocado & vegetables like tomato, carrot, cucumber, beetroot and sweet potato are high in fibre, contain vitamins, nutrients, minerals and have digestive properties. Hence, consumption of these fruits help in restoring a good digestive health and ensuring a proper functioning of the intestines.

 

  • WHOLE GRAINS

These include brown rice, oats and whole grain or whole wheat bread. They are rich in fibre and hence help is solving digestive problems.

 

  • GINGER

Ginger acts as one of the most effective ingredient that helps in digestion and helps to cure motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, gas and loss of appetite. Include ginger in the food on a daily basis. Consume 2-3 grams of ginger. Excess consumption will lead to heartburn.

 

  • HOT WATER

After waking up, drinking one glass of hot water every morning helps to ease the digestion process. Hot water can be consumed at any time through out the day.

 

  • LEMON WATER

As mentioned above, lemon water helps in the same way and also detoxifies the body.
